My Choice!

My first old school tattoo was the Swallow, I was never interested in its meaning I just loved the style. However, in the back of my mind, I knew there would be questions on why I got it. Now according to the Sailor Jerry website, the Swallow tattoo signifies that a sailor had sailed 5000 miles and returned home. Now, swallows embark on an impressive journey between the UK and South Africa twice a year in search of food according to the RSPB.

According to the Sailor Jerry website the description of the swallow tattoo emphasises on the word ‘returned’. Now, I travelled the east coast of Australia and returned home safely, so could that be my answer to the interrogators of my tattoo? Well, it doesn’t really live up to the honour a sailor would get for sailing 5000 miles, plus I am also a terrible swimmer and probably couldn’t survive a day at sea. So, what do I say to these tattoo grillers? Well, I like the bold lines, bright colours and iconic style of the tattoo-it’s just aesthetically pleasing to me.

Even today, I still get questioned about that swallow tattoo and still I give the same answer. However, it’s been a while since that first Sailor Jerry tattoo, and I now have to say the same bloody thing about the anchor, the nautical star, the skull and the ace of spades tattoo. Those people have given up now on asking “what does that symbolise?” “what does it mean?” and “if I got a tattoo it would have to mean something”, which I have no problem with I have a few tattoos on my arm that have meaning, for example the moon with the arrow piercing through it, or the pineapple with Antigua written below it; even the Super Bomberman tattoo (Nintendo) on my forearm. All tattoos are done in traditional bold lines, bright colour and stylised in an old school Sailor Jerry traditional way. Basically, I chose a general style of tattoo I liked, (which the majority that has been inked onto my skin today does not have any specific meaning or importance), and no matter how old I get I will not cringe or regret them in the future.

So, if you ask me tattoos need no meaning, and I have never questioned myself on my choice of tattoo again. I love this style so much, I wanted Howling Threads to showcase traditional old school tattoos on sustainable threads!

This is me!

Read up on our latest blog posts inspired by tattoos, music, travelling and the lifestyle that comes with it.

Howling Threads is a UK streetwear brand inspired by tattoos, music, travel, and life.

Follow Us On.. Instagram & Facebook

#howlingthreads

www.howlingthreads.co.uk

An interesting article about the Van Life boom since the coronavirus pandemic (covid19).
